Sheath Voltage Limiters in HV Cable Systems: What the Design Must Prove
Engineering guide: A sheath voltage limiter is not selected from system voltage alone. It must coordinate normal standing voltage, temporary and transient overvoltage, sheath insulation and energy duty for the specific bonding arrangement.

Normal and abnormal duties
During normal operation the SVL should not conduct continuously at the expected sheath voltage. During a qualifying transient it limits voltage by conducting. The design must distinguish continuous voltage, temporary overvoltage and impulse duty.
Inputs to insulation coordination
Use the cable and accessory insulation levels, bonding configuration, earth connections, fault-current path, switching and lightning study results, lead length and link-box layout. CIGRE notes that each project requires its own insulation-coordination assessment.
Lead arrangement affects protection
Long bonding leads add inductance and can increase the voltage that appears during fast transients. Placement and routing are therefore electrical design details, not only installation convenience.
Failure is not always visible
An SVL can be damaged without obvious external evidence. The maintenance plan should define inspection, condition checks and replacement criteria according to the manufacturer and owner’s procedures.
Documentation test
The file should connect each installed SVL identifier to its location, rating, calculation duty, manufacturer data and test record. If that chain is missing, future maintenance cannot confirm suitability.
